Calling All Marthas…
Once again, we need to pick your brain. We’ve been hired by Plats du Chef, a manufacturer specializing in frozen hors d'oeuvres, appetizers and side dishes. The company specializes in private label products for retailers like Loblaws, Sobeys, Metro, M&M, and Costco. Here’s what the company wants to learn:

  • What are women's needs when it comes to entertaining at home?
  • How do store-bought appetizers/hors d'oeuvres (fresh or frozen) fit in your busy lives, in other words, what needs do these products address?
  • What do you like or dislike with what is currently available in stores?
  • What are your expectations around product assortment and variety, taste, nutrition, format/packaging, preparation time, summer vs. winter items, fresh vs. frozen, etc.?
  • Who do you think is doing a good job in the appetizer realm?
Network and Nosh

We are hosting several research-based "cocktail dînatoires" - French-style receptions where you get to sample variety of hors d’oeuvres and finger food, warm and cold, savoury and sweet, and tell us what you think. There will be a $100.00 honorarium as well.

We are looking for women who are:
  • Between 25 – 64
  • Primarily responsible for grocery shopping and meal preparation
  • Entertain at home at least once a month (formal or informal setting)
  • Have purchased pre-prepared appetizers and hors d'oeuvres in the past
  • Willing to do creative and fun homework in the form of a collage
Some "me-time"…A creative project

Though it seems like "Oh no, one more thing to do!", the women who have done this exercise thank us afterward.  It's a rare moment when we get the opportunity to creatively focus on ourselves. This is an integral part of the research so if you are unable to commit to taking this on, don't worry about taking a pass on this research session. There will be more you can participate in down the road.

We need you to create a collage from headlines and pictures from magazines, newspapers and personal photographs that illustrate, besides feeding hungry guests, what prepared finger foods allow you to do in different home entertaining situations, both formal and informal. For example, my research partner Lucie has guests that are always in the kitchen when she prepares dinner so fingers food on her kitchen island contributes not only a festive air, it gives them something to do while she cooks. When I think of finger foods, I think of sitting down more often, chatting more with my guests. Remember to represent a wide variety of occasions.
